Mad Masks' Origin Story

Posted by Rachel Quintana on Sep 11th 2026

How Mad Masks Began

Mad Masks started with a Halloween costume and a mask that just wasn't good enough.

In 2012, Rachel wanted to dress up for Halloween alongside her husband, who was going as the Joker.  She chose Harley Quinn from the Arkham Asylum video game and found a costume she loved. The mask that came with it, though, was a completely different story. It looked cheap, felt disappointing, and took away from the costume she had been excited to wear.

So Rachel decided to make her own.

After researching what materials would work best, she settled on leather.  She had never set out to start a mask business; she simply wanted a mask that looked right and did justice to the costume.

And it worked! The finished mask didn't just fix the problem; it ended up being the highlight of the costume that brought the entire look together.

With some leather left over, Rachel made a few more masks and put them up for sale online. To her surprise, people actually wanted them. A few masks turned into more orders and even custom requests, and that little Halloween project began taking on a life of its own.

That was the beginning of Mad Masks.

What started with Rachel trying to make one better mask has grown into a business built around the idea that a great costume deserves a great mask. Today, we make high-quality leather masks for cosplay and Halloween with meticulous care about the details that make a costume come together.
